About this experience
Discover the rich and complex Jewish history of Hamburg—once home to Germany’s second-largest Jewish population. This walking tour connects past and present as we explore the city’s Jewish heritage and ongoing legacy.
Before WWII, around 20,000 Jewish people lived in Hamburg, shaping the city’s culture and spirit. Nearly half emigrated before the war, while most who remained were killed during the Holocaust. On this tour, we visit sites that made up the area known as “Little Jerusalem,” tracing the rise of the Jewish community, the birth of Liberal Judaism, and the milestones of emancipation.
As we walk, we’ll discuss the diverse currents within Hamburg’s Jewish population, and the gradual exclusion and persecution they faced under the Nazi regime. We’ll also draw connections to events and attitudes seen worldwide today.
We’ll learn about acts of resistance, present-day commemoration, and the plans of Hamburg’s current Jewish community—offering a perspective that honors memory and sparks dialogue about the future.
